Florence, Pitti Palace- the Palatine Gallery and Boboli Gardens
Firenze, Palazzo Pitti – Galleria Palatina e Giardino di Boboli
Pitti Palace, although still baring the name of its original owner, was the home of three important dynasties: the Medici and Habsburg-Lorraine Grand Dukes and the royal dynasty of the Savoys from 1865 to 1871 when Florence was the capital of Italy.
In the Palatine Gallery we will admire the largest collection in the world of Raphael‘s works, as well as Titian, Andrea del Sarto, Caravaggio, Rubens, etc. Over 900 works of art of which we have to thank, above all, the great collectors of the Medici family. The layout is that of a picture gallery, not following a time line but only what was the taste in the late seventeenth century of the Grand Prince Ferdinand de Medici. Losing one’s way is easy but we will admire the masterpieces togetther so as to avoid ending the visit regretting not to have seen fundamental and unmissable works of art!
We will then happily lose ourselves in the vastness of the Boboli Gardens, the garden of the Palazzo, an example of a garden that was created in the Italian style and then evolved stylistically over the centuries with architects such as Ammannati and Buontalenti that contains works of art by Giambologna, Pietro Tacca, Vincenzo de Rossi, etc. … as well as the copies of Michelangelo’s Prisons in a most spectacular setting.
After a break for lunch we will leave to visit the Religious Center with the majestic cathedral of S. Maria del Fiore, the baptistery dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, Giotto’s Bell Tower and the ever mysterious Brunelleschi’s Dome. In the Medieval District, called Dante’s District, between the alleys and the tower houses we will discover how the florentine people lived in 1200.
